We are absolutely convinced that Student Baptisms are a huge deal.
So big, in fact, that we dedicate an entire night to nothing but celebrating these stories and helping affirm the students who took this step of obedience. We believe this night is the best possible night for an NYM student to be baptized! So why is it such a big deal? Why do we try to make these nights so different and special? It basically comes down to 2 things:
- Baptism is always a big deal to God
- A Student taking this step represents a trajectory of a lifetime of following Jesus
ONE - When Jesus left this earth, He left his followers with the command to Make Disciples (Matthew 28:19-20). One of the essential elements of making disciples is Baptism - a public declaration that a person is following after Jesus. So, baptism isn't for the Christ-Follower who has it all together, it's for any and every Christ-Follower as a step of obedience! Something we say around here at Northridge is that an un-baptized Christian is a walking contradiction. Baptism is a step of obedience that we would encourage EVERY Christ-follower to take!
TWO - The reason that we here at NYM take Student baptisms so seriously is because we believe they represent something really significant. Students in 6th-12th grade are in a pivotal stage of deciding who they are, what they're going to do and what they're going to be all about. When a person at a stage this crucial is willing to step out in obedience to do something that is totally radical, counter-cultural and considered bizarre by their peers, we want to be the first, loudest and most obvious cheerleaders! Just imagine the difference that this baptism represents - a life committed to obedience and full devotion to Jesus rather than selfishness, sin and destructive behavior. Biblical habits and patterns of thinking that begin at age 12, or 14 or 18, rather than 30, 40 or 70, when so many non-Biblical habits and patterns of thinking are already entrenched. Now, every baptism matters, and all of us here at NYM are blown away by adult baptism stories each and every time - but even those adults will often say that they wish they had made this decision sooner. And every time a student takes this step, we want to help them understand and feel the magnitude of the life-changing, incredibly GOOD decision they've made!
Here's the Simple Way You Can Get Involved
Find a student in your sphere of influence who is a Christ-Follower and has not been baptized, and use your influence to help them see how important baptism is as a next-step. Who knows - maybe this student lives in your home! Now, we don't want to excessively pressure people into being baptized, because this isn't a step that should be taken lightly. But, it's also not a step that is only for those who are "super-spiritual" or "perfect"! The only pre-requisite to being ready for baptism is being a genuine follower of Jesus Christ. If a student has taken that step, they're ready!
And here's the cool thing - you could be the influence that God uses to help a student cross that line of obedience and Go Public with their faith! Think of the life-long implications of that decision! Think of the regret that can be avoided, the baggage that can be skipped and the joy that will come from obeying the command of Jesus! You can be that influence. Just click HERE to help a student start that simple, life-altering process! Don't let more time pass - the deadline for applications is May 10th!
Maybe someone took that step with you. Someone took that step with Beka Jamison, Luke Walters and Cassie Murray (some students from our last baptism service). Will you be that person for someone else?
We love sharing the stories from our last Student baptism service. You can watch all of them by just clicking HERE.
