Parent Cue

This is the final week in our series The Comparison Trap. We'll be closing out with the heart of the matter. It truly is not about the things we have...our responsibility is the management of whatever it is that God has given us.

We're Teaching This

Have you ever looked at someone else and thought, “Does he/she have more ______ than me?” Comparison is being caught in the trap of constantly asking how we measure up to others. “Do they have more money than me?” “Do they get more attention from others?” “Are they more talented than me?” We preoccupy ourselves with these questions, but God has a better plan.

Jesus was a great storyteller. He was incredible at using real-life, down-to-earth stories from everyday life that communicate profound truths. Truths that change everything about our perspective.

He used the story of three servants, each entrusted with a certain amount of money, to illustrate the question God would have us ask—a question that will free us from the comparison trap once and for all.

Check out Matthew 25:14-30 for the full story!

Bottom Line: What you've been entrusted with is far less important than what you do with what you have.

Ask This:

  1. Do you ever find yourself comparing your abilities/opportunities to other people?
  2. What sorts of things do you normally compare? why is that?
  3. What was the bottom line from tonight's talk?
  4. Why do you think that story applies to the abilities/opportunities you have?
  5. What ARE the abilities/opportunities God has given you?
  6. How can we leverage those to honor God and influence others?
  7. What are the abilities/opportunities God has given US as a family?
  8. How can we leverage those to honor God and influence others?
